Kadokawa Group Has Been Attacked By Ransomware Gang

Kadokawa Group, a multinational media conglomerate, is currently dealing with a significant cyberattack that has affected its operations. The company owns FromSoftware, the developer of the highly anticipated game Elden Ring, as well as Anime News Network. The cyberattack has caused disruptions to various systems, and Kadokawa Group is actively working on finding solutions and workarounds.

In a detailed update, Kadokawa Group disclosed that the cyberattack had a major impact on Niconico, a popular Japanese video sharing site. As a result, all services on Niconico have been suspended since June 8. However, there is no clear information about the impact on FromSoftware, and it remains uncertain whether the developer has been affected by the attack. IGN, a prominent gaming news outlet, has reached out to FromSoftware for more information and clarification.

The ransomware group responsible for the attack has claimed to have downloaded confidential information, including personal employee data. In response, Kadokawa Group is collaborating with external organizations to investigate the extent of the data leakage and address the situation.

The gaming industry has previously faced cyberattacks, with notable studios like Rockstar Games and Insomniac being heavily affected by ransomware attacks that resulted in the unauthorized release of confidential data. A recent report on Wired has highlighted the increasing severity of ransomware attacks in 2024, emphasizing the need for robust cybersecurity measures.

While it remains uncertain whether FromSoftware has been impacted by the hack, IGN has also reached out to Bandai Namco, the publisher of Elden Ring, and Kadokawa Group for additional information. IGN will continue to provide updates as more details emerge regarding the cyberattack and its implications for FromSoftware and other entities within Kadokawa Group.
